Overview

The Youth Expedition Project is a Service-Learning Programme by Youth Corps Singapore, designed to nurture confident and resilient youths who are active citizens with the desire to make a difference — both at home and overseas. The 2024 cohort was deployed to a rural community in Cambodia.

Teaching Sustainability

Looking at the immediate needs of the community, the team identified practical ways to introduce sustainability thinking without prescribing change. Lessons focused on how to repurpose waste plastics into twine and how to distinguish biodegradable from non-biodegradable materials, with guidance on appropriate disposal.

The goal wasn't to impose a framework, but to provide knowledge and tools the community could apply on their own terms — small, actionable steps with genuine long-term impact.

Teaching Basic First Aid

In a relatively rural part of Cambodia, healthcare is accessible but not always immediate. Untreated minor injuries can escalate to infections or worse. Teaching basic first aid — proper hygiene, sterilisation, and wound dressing — equipped community members to act before professional care is available, effectively eliminating a category of preventable harm.
